Rapinoe started her career in soccer in 2009 when the Chicago Illinois Red Stars, the newly formed Women's Professional Soccer WPS League team, selected Rapinoe. The team was in existence until it disbanded at the close of the 2010. Rapinoe spent a brief time with the Philadelphia Pennsylvania Independence before being traded to Boca Raton Florida MagicJack. The forward scored two goals in just eight games to help guide the magicJack to a third-place finish that season. The magicJack ended up dissolving in late 2011, and the WPS was dissolved in early 2012. In 2011 Rapinoe played some matches with Sydney Football Club FC of the Australian W-League before returning to the United States. She next played for the Seattle Washington Sounders Women now known as the Sound FC. Rapinoe spent the 2013 soccer season in France. It was the Seattle Reign FC - now OL Reign - of the National Women's Soccer League NWSL, which was formed when the WPS disbanded - then became her own team. Her second Olympics was in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in the year 2016. In Rio, she and the U.S. lost in the quarterfinals. Rapinoe's first FIFA Women's World Cup was back in 2011. In the years 2015 and 2019 her contributions have helped players from the U.S. Women's World Cup winning team win consecutive titles. In 2018 she became cocaptain of the team. Rapinoe was awarded two bronze medals in her part in the United States' 4-3 win against Australia in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Japan has been postponed until 2021 by the COVID-19 virus pandemic.
